The Lyric Opera Guild sponsors frequent trips to other cities and countries so opera fans may sample the best of opera and musical performances elsewhere. Washington, D.C. - SOLD OUT

November 21-23, 2008

The Lyric Opera Guild has been trying for years to get tickets to one of the sold-out performances of Italian star Andrea Bocelli, famed as both a pop and classical singer, and we've finally done it! We have a block of tickets to Bocelli's only American appearance this year, as a soloist in Rossini's Petite Messe Solonelle, to be performed in Washington, D.C. with the Washington National Opera and Chorus, under the baton of non other than maestro Plácido Domingo.

We have a very limited number of tickets for this trip, so please pay careful attention to the sign-up deadline below. Here are the details:

Friday, November 21. We travel to Washington, D.C. nonstop on Midwest Airways and take a motor coach to our hotel, the George Washington University Inn. Our hotel is ideally situated on a quiet, tree-lined street in the prestigious residential neighborhood of historic Foggy Bottom. It is just two blocks from the famed Kennedy Center and a short walk to the historic Georgetown district.

That evening we will stroll to the Kennedy Center to hear maestro Plácido Domingo conduct the Petite Messe Solonelle with a quartet of soloists, including Andrea Bocelli, with the Washington National Opera Chorus and Orchestra. Petite Messe Solonelle was the major work written by Rossini late in life, long after he had retired from writing operas, and contains his very last and, according to some, most beautiful vocal music. In Rossini's own words, "Is it indeed music for the blest that I have just written, or just some blessed music?"

The Lyric Opera Guild is one of only three groups nationwide to have secured tickets for this performance, which is sold out.

Saturday, November 22. The day is yours to explore nearby Georgetown, visit one of Washington's famed museums, or enjoy any of the number of sights in our nation's capitol. This evening we will hear EMI recording artist Lars Vogt at the piano performing with Washington's National Symphony Orchestra in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor.

Conductor Yakov Kreizberg also leads Dvorak's popular Carnival Overture and a melodic but unusual work, German composer Franz Schmidt's Symphony No. 4 in C Major.

This trip will also include a group meal at a specially chosen Washington restaurant.

Sunday, November 23. We return to Kansas City via a nonstop Midwest Airways flight, with many pleasant musical memories ringing in our ears.

New York City - SOLD OUT

December 29, 2008 - January 1, 2009

Wow! With a lineup of stars like that, what more do you need to know? But in case you would prefer more details, here you go:

The Lyric Opera Guild is taking its first-ever New Year's Eve trip to New York so you can enjoy seeing in the New Year, amidst all of the glitter and splendor of the Big Apple and the Metropolitan Opera, which is featuring three spectacular star-studded operas to finish out the year.

Monday, December 29. After our nonstop flight to New York, we will attend Giacomo Puccini's romantic La bohéme in the elaborate Franco Zeffirelli production at the Met (it has to be seen live to be believed!) starring tenor Ramon Vargas as Rodolfo (you may have seen him in the recent Met simulcast), the spectacular soprano Anna Netrebko as Mimi, and Polish superstar baritone Mariusz Kwiecien as Marcello. What a treat!

Tuesday, December 30. After a free day to enjoy New York, we return to the Met in the evening to see the radiant Renée Fleming in Jules Massenet's classic Thais. Fleming, one of today's most sought-after sopranos, is famed for this role, portrayed by many of the great sopranos in opera history, in which she plays a courtesan in search of spiritual sustenance. The renowned baritone Thomas Hampson portrays the monk who succumbs to her temptation and who falls from grace. Massenet’s sensual score is presented in a production by John Cox that originated at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Wednesday, December 31 (New Year's Eve). What does the Met have in store for us on New Year's Eve? A gala performance of Giacomo Puccini's gorgeous but rarely heard La Rondine, starring none other than the husband and wife team of Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna, both among today's most stellar performers. And if that weren't enough, the cast also includes basso favorite Samuel Ramey! Gheorghiu plays the kept woman who gambles on true love, and Alagna is the man who makes her question the cost of her glittering existence. Nicolas Joël directs the new Met production of this gorgeously melodic look at love.

Thursday, January 1, 2009. We return to Kansas City after three fabulous days in New York to close out the year 2008.

New York

March 17-21, 2009

Natalie Dessay, Juan Diego Flórez, Renée Fleming, Roberto Alagna, Waltraut Meier, Marcello Álvarez

Question: What are the two hottest tickets at The Metropolitan Opera in New York this season? Answer: Bellini's La Sonnambula, featuring superstars Natalie Dessay and Juan Diego Flórez, and Dvorak's Rusalka, starring Renée Fleming.

Guess who has tickets to them both? Thats right, the Lyric Opera Guild. We've committed to these tickets way early so we could bring you this star-studded trip. But we have only 30 tickets per performance, so once those 30 spots on this trip are taken, there are no more!

But wait...that's not all! We also have choice seats to Verdi's Il Trovatore featuring tenor star Marcello Álverez and the great Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, along with the famous double bill of Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci with mezzo Waltraut Meier and tenor Roberta Alagna. It should be four evenings to remember!

Tuesday, March 17, 2009. We leave for New York, arriving mid afternoon at the Milburn Hotel, just a few minutes from Lincoln Center. After a group meal at a favorite local restaurant we'll stroll to the Met for Dvorak's romantic opera Rusalka, one of the most gorgeous operas in the repertoire - it's the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Little Mermaid set to lush music. The incomparable Renée Fleming is our star. The opera also features celebrated soprano Christine Goerke, mezzo star Stephanie Blythe, tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko and the imposing bass Kristinn Sigmundsson.

Wednesday, March 18. After a day exploring New York, you'll join us at the Met for seats at the sold-out La Sonnambula (The Sleepwalker), featuring coloratura wonders Natalie Dessay and Juan Diego Flórez, who brought down the New York house last year in La Fille du Regimente. This dramatic operas, one of Bellini's most melodious, has everybody in opera world in a twitter. You'll be there for what will prove to me a memorable evening at the Met.

Thursday, March 19. This evening you'll enjoy Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci, two verismo potboilers, with some of today's greatest dramatic stars: mezzo Waltraut Meier, tenor Roberto Alagna, soprano Nuccia Focile, and baritone Alberto Mastromarino, among others.

Friday, March 20. We'll end our New York opera evenings with one of Verdi's greatest classics, Il Trovatore, starring baritone opera evenings with one of Verdi's greatest classics, Il Trovatore, starring baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, tenor Marcello Álvarez, and George London Foundation winner Sondra Radvanovsky, along with mezzo Luciana D'Intino and others. It should be an evening of great tunes, well sung, to cap off our New York trip.

Saturday, March 21. You will return with us to Kansas City, taking with you some of opera's greatest tunes and life long memories.

Remember that if you prefer to substitute a Broadway show for any of the operas, just let us know and we'll try to make the arrangements.

Philiadelphia or Boston?

It’s likely that the Guild will wrap up its 2008-2009 trip schedule with an East Coast trip to either Philadelphia or Boston in May or June 2009. We have never taken an opera trip to either city, but both have excellent opera companies and lots of local attractions as well. We’re awaiting final information on schedules and casts, and as soon as we finalize this we will let you know!
