Volunteer Program
For 50 years, volunteers have been a driving force behind the scenes of the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. Our eager volunteers help make opera possible in Kansas City. By joining the Lyric Opera Guild or volunteering in any of our departments you can make a difference in the cultural landscape of our community.
Office Assistance:
-
Mailings: The development, education, marketing and ticketing departments periodically need office assistance to help with mailings during normal business hours. Please contact Shannon Sundberg if you would like to volunteer in this area.
- Marketing Department administrative assistance: The marketing department utilizes volunteers’ talents in data entry and research during normal business hours. Please contact Shannon Sundberg if you would like to volunteer in this area.
Special Events:
-
Fairs and community events: The marketing department needs volunteers throughout the year to staff booths at events such as the Plaza Art Fair. Please contact Shannon Sundberg if you would be willing to volunteer in this area.
-
Lyric Auction: Volunteers are needed annually to set up and work the silent auction at the Opera Ball held each spring. Please contact Amy Peak if you would like to volunteer in this area.
Performances:
-
Ushers: Volunteer ushers are needed for every opera performance. Ushers stuff programs, greet audience members and show them to their seats. Ushers are asked to remain through the last intermission but we hope volunteers will watch the entire opera as our guests. Please contact Rickey Porter if you would like to volunteer in this area.
-
Boutique: The boutique, a project of the Lyric Opera Guild, is open during each performance and has CD’s, opera glasses, clothing items, jewelry, etc. Volunteers from the Lyric Opera Guild set-up, sell merchandise and strike. Please contact Shannon Sundberg if you would like to volunteer in this area.
-
Supernumeraries: The Lyric offers a unique opportunity for volunteers with theatrical flair. Supernumeraries are needed to play onstage, non-speaking roles in many of our operas. Please contact our Super Captain, Kathryn Barker if you would like to volunteer in this area.
Volunteer opportunities continually change based on the needs of the organization. Training is provided for agreed-upon volunteer assignments. The success of the Lyric Opera volunteer program is contingent on the full cooperation and dedication of both the staff and the volunteers.
If you have ideas about how you can volunteer at the Lyric other than the options listed above please contact Rickey Porter at (816) 471-4933 or rporter@kcopera.org.
